Dixie Caverns

Description: Discovered by a dog accidently, Dixie Caverns is Southwest Virginia's only show cave. Instead of going down into the earth, a tour guide directs visitors on a 1/4 mile hike upward through the mountain caverns. Though there are a handful of featured sites within the caverns, the highlight is the central, huge Cathedral Room. The whole thing takes about 45 minutes to go through. There is a natural opening inside the Cathedral Room (where the bats come in), but there are plenty of man-made lights, platforms and stairways (with railings) throughout to make the trip safer for everyone. As hiking or caving goes its fairly easy, but there are plenty of wet steps to go up and down, so be careful.

Basic Directions: East of Blacksburg, Dixie Caverns is located in Salem, VA - directly on highways US 11 and 460, immediately off Interstate 81 at the Dixie Caverns exit 132. Its a super convenient location and super easy to find.

Dixie Caverns Entrance Dixie Caverns Cathedral Room
Two doors down....Here is the entrance to the caverns. Difficult to tell from this picture, but this is the Cathedral Room. Its very exansive and bluish light on the top center is actually the natural opening to the cave.

Dixie Caverns Wedding Bell Dixie Caverns Tite Mite
The call this the Wedding Bell and supposedly you can have your wedding under it for $50.00. Mighty and Tighty

Dixie Caverns Bat Stalagtite Dixie Dust!
These stalactite formations are cool because they are flat, like paper, rather than the standard icicle type A pool of water here.
