Blacksburg
Virginia Area - Recreational Attractions
|
| |
The
New River Valley is located in the south western part
of Virginia and is the proud home of the Virginia Tech
Hokies. As the map indicates, this vast valley encompasses
several towns, cities and counties including Blacksburg,
Christiansburg, Dublin, Eggleston, Floyd, Pembroke,
Pearisburg, McCoy, Narrows, Newport, Radford, Riner,
Shawsville, Bland County, Craig County, Giles County,
Floyd County, Montgomery County and Pulaski County.
This beautiful region of Virginia lends itself to
a variety of recreational activities including, hiking,
biking, boating, fishing, canoeing, site seeing, horse
back riding, camping and many more. It is these
recreational attractions which help morph a regular
ole place into a special community for local residents,VT
students and visiting guests.
Though not a complete list by any means, the intent
of this site is to give you a small taste of what the
New River Valley has to offer. Our interactive panoramic
images allow you to essentially "step in side" a host
of virtual recreational attractions and get a feel
for at least some of the places you must see to truly
appreciate the NRVarea.

Bald
Knob - Pembroke / Giles County, VA Virginia - This
magnificent scenic view is proceeded by a 1 mile (thats a guess)
up hill hike or jog using the vehicle size,
gravel road. The alternative is a narrow hiking
trail or path through the woods. You could ride
a horse or mountain bike if you wanted to, but its best
suited for slow walks. This is not a difficult hiking trail
and most anyone could do it if you take your time. |
|
Barneys
Wall -
Pembroke / Giles County, VA Virginia - This
scenic mountain view sets directly above the Cascades Water
Fall. It is proceeded by a 3/4 mile hike down the mountain
trail. Most of it is very moderate hiking.
Due to low laying brush, I would not recommend a horse,
maybe a mountain bike. This is not a highly publicized
trail or look out and there is minimal parking off of the
main fire trail road. |
|
Caboose
Park Recreation - Blacksburg, VA Virginia - This old
caboose at this park has been a landmark for at least 30
years and is surrounded by a vast selection of playground,
swings, slides and ball fields. There are a couple of nice
covered structures for picnicking. Nearby is the Blacksburg
Community Center for indoor basket ball and next to that
is the Blacksburg Aquatic Center for swimming. |
| |
Cascades
Water Fall - Pembroke, VA Virginia -
One way, it's just over two miles. Many hikers walk up
the up
to the 66-foot Cascades waterfall
using the right hand side trails & walk back down the
service road
to the left of Little Stony Creek - after a nice hike up
and a bit of swimming. This is one of top recreational
attractions for Blacksburg Area residents & guests.
Though 4 miles round trip, most anyone can do it. |
|
Dismal
Falls - Bland County, VA Virginia - This
recreational attraction is more of a natural swimming destination
rather than a hike (which equates to a short walk down the trail
and through the woods). The multi-level falls are at most 15
feet tall and there are many slow moving water spots or pools
to relax in. Some locals call it the Bland County Country Club
for good reason! |
|
Dragons
Tooth - Catawba, VA Virginia - Dragons Tooth is an
awsome full day hike with open rock face sections which
offer tremendous scenic views into the Jefferson National
Forest country side. On a clear day you can see parts of
Roanoke. Bring plenty of water, this is not a super difficult
hike, but it does include some steep sections and it
will take a couple of hours to reach grand apex of sight
seeing. |
|
Butt
Mountain Fire Tower - Giles County, VA Virginia - This
mountain region is the same one that host the famous Mt.
Lake Resort / Hotel. Being located at one of the highest
points, this site was once used as a fire tower lookout
spot. The tower is now abandoned is has more utility as
a cell tower than anything else. The scenic views of Giles
and Pearisburg can not be beat. Park and walk about 250
yard to experience it. |
|
Golden
Hills Frisbee Disc Golf Course - Christiansburg, VA Virginia -
This Free and Public course is tight and wooded with severe elevation. This
nine basket course has four sets of tees that are really
long (2490', 3642', 4259'). Enjoy the
tranquility - the mountains of SW Virginia are as challenging
as they are beautiful. You can play with a regular ole
frisbee or buy official discs at your local sporting good
store. |
|
Mabry
Mill - Blue Ridge Parkway, Meadows of Dan, VA Virginia -
Nestled off of the Parkway, this beautiful location that has been photographed
and painted many times. This attraction host a restored
sawmill, woodworking shop and blacksmith shop. At various
times of the year you can watch old time skills such as basket
weaving, seat caneing, spinning, applebutter making and oldtime
bluegrass. |
|
Mountain
Lake Hotel Resort - Giles County, VA Virginia - Mt. Lake offers an assortment
of outdoor activities for every age. Enjoy the lake with
kayaks, canoes paddleboats and a lakeside swimming area.
A favorite way to explore the property is by hiking and mountain biking over
2,600 acres of wilderness through a network of trails.
Guided hikes are offered through the Wilderness Conservancy. |
|
Newport Covered Bridge - Newport VA Virginia -
Also know as Sinking Creek Covered Bridge or Clover Hollow Covered Bridge. This is a circa 1916, modified Howe trusses built over Sinking Creek, a 70-foot span currently maintained by Giles County, was left in place for the property owner when a new bridge was built in 1949. The bridge is open to the public so please visit and tread lightly. |
|
New River Water Sports - Eggleston,
VA Virginia - This rope swing is located immediately after the big bend in the New River at Eggleston. Due to liablity to the land owner and ongoing or unverified maintenance issues its a questionable activity even if the swing is in place. Re-live your old Huck Fin / Tarzarn day memories (if you can get on it) and if not the river brings plenty of fun regardless. |
|
New River Falls - McCoy, VA
Virginia - A hot spot for summer time fun, the New River Falls is home to the New River Junction, a place to rent tubes, picknic, cookout, camp etc. Bring friends & a cooler (no glass), drop your tubes in at the the top, float for about an hour until you get to the rapids, get picked up by bus & do it all over again. This part of the river is know for swimming, kayaking, fishing & sun bathing. |
|
New River Fishing - Whitethorne,
VA Virginia - Whitethorne is not really a town or anything, its just the road leading to a primary public boat launch ramp. Drop your fishing boat in and go either way, up or town the river. Some parts are shallow, so you should proceed cautiously until you get to know the river. Most boats there are flat bottom with Jet motors. Trout is probably the most common caught fish - good luck. |
|
Pandapas Pond - Jefferson
National Forest, Montgomery County, VA Virginia - This is an all around great place to get "out doors" without having to really drive far or put out much effort when you get there. Hiking can be as easy as going around the pond, but if you want do some great mountain biking or horse back riding this is the place. Trails vary from easy and flat to steep up and down the mountain. A+ |
|
Steppin' Out - Blacksburg,
VA Virginia -
Featuring over 150 crafters from around the region, sidewalk sales, all manner of ethnic and regional food, children's activities, as well as three stages of live music and performance. Stepping Out occurs annually on the first weekend (Friday and Saturday) of every August. Its a great festival of fun for all and yearly opportunity to buy unique gifts. |
|
Lyric Theatre - Blacksburg,
VA Virginia -
As a center of cultural and civic activity for the region, the Lyric Theatre is the place to enjoy films, theater, music, dance, and lectures. The Lyric Theatre, the heart of Blacksburg, enhances activity downtown and provides a community facility for a diversity of programs which complement movies and entertainment now available. |

The Duck Pond provides a peaceful resting spot for VT students and visitors- as well as for dozens of ducks and geese. The pond was created in 1937. A smaller pond, just north of the Duck Pond, is known as the Ice Pond, so called because it was the source of ice for cadets until a refrigeration plant opened in 1898.
